Blyth - Up the Creek Cottage

Nestled behind a dip in the landscape and hidden in a forest, lies a small slice of heaven. Kelly and Andrew Wharton have been the proud owners of this idyllic property they lovingly refer to as Up The Creek Cottage since 2012. The cottage was built over 40 years ago by the previous owner, and when they purchased the 20 acre holding they weren’t sure what they wanted to do with the cute little A-frame that came with it.

They soon realized that keeping the unit occupied would be the best way to keep it from deteriorating so they began renting it out, originally just to previous guests who had been clients of the original owners, but then expanding their offerings.

The cottage overlooks a large pond that was originally built as a trout pond. Andrew still stocks it with trout each year and guests can try their luck, and purchase anything they catch by the inch.

In addition to the trout, the Whartons keep a small flock of ducks and a pair of geese, which are often joined by wild ducks, Canada geese and a resident heron, creating quite the menagerie. Turtles can be spotted basking in the sun and frogs will provide a soundscape for your coffee on the large deck, or eating smores around the firepit.

The place is truly an outdoors paradise, with hiking trails throughout the property that is located right beside the Blyth Creek. It's conveniently located just a hop, skip and a jump from the Goderich to Guelph Rail Trail for biking and hiking. The cottage is open year round, and the Whartons say it is an ideal base for winter snowmobiling as it is very close to the trails.

Ideally situated close to the Blyth Festival and Cowbell Brewing, you don’t have to travel far for an evening’s entertainment. The sandy beaches of Lake Huron and the shopping centres in Goderich are a mere 20 minute drive away.

Although it is a cottage in the woods, you don’t have to rough it. It is well-appointed with two loft bedrooms, a full kitchen and bath and a cozy woodstove in the living room.  There is wifi and a 20-inch HDTV with standard cable and a DVD player for those rare rainy days.
