Lucknow - Kites in the Field

If you have ever been told to go fly a kite, here is your chance! Lucknow’s 12th annual Kites in the Fields will be held on September 26 and 27th at Graceland which is located at the end of Walter Street. Saturday and Sunday the kites will fly from 12:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and the kites at night will fly on Saturday evening from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

The kites at night event features kites lit up with LED lights, some of which are remote controlled, as well as lit up ground displays. Kiters and spectators are encouraged to participate by lighting up themselves, their strollers and wagons or whatever you can think of with LED lights.

There is no charge to get into Kites in the Fields but donations are gratefully accepted to help offset some of the costs associated with putting on this spectacular event.

Since Murray and Elizabeth Irvin started Kites in the Field in 2014, the attendance has increased from 50 people to over 3,000 people. Kite flyers come from as far away as Texas and New York State as well as from all over Ontario. Kite flying is a world wide activity enjoyed by many different cultures.

Everyone is welcome to fly their kites at this event. It doesn’t matter if your kite comes from a dollar store or if you paid thousands of dollars for it, all are welcome. If you go to watch but then decide you would like to go fly a kite, there are kites available for purchase at this event. There is a public flying area for beginners with experienced kiters available to help trouble shoot any problems you may have getting your kite in the air and keeping it there.

Back this year is The Wind Jammers, a precision kite flying team from Detroit, with kites on poles so if the wind doesn’t co-operate, they can still put on a show. Their show also features bubbles and a candy drop. There are also ground displays for everyone to enjoy. One of the ground displays is a flag arch made up of Canadian flag kites that Murray made. Murray also makes some of his own kites.

For the little people there is a children’s fun zone to help keep them entertained with new activities and past favourites returning.

There isn’t any camping or food booths at this event so people are encouraged to pack a picnic and snacks, bring their chairs and enjoy this amazing outdoor event.
