Homegrown Local Grocer

Homegrown Local Grocer began back in 2019, as David Scherpenzeel and his family farm noticed that there was so much great local food being produced in the region, but potential customers were limited in their ability to access it. Driving around to find the farmers selling at the gate, or hoping that the local farmers’ markets were open on a day that you could shop were the best hope.

The idea was to create a space where they could sell their products, and supplement with other local products in a friendly, community-driven environment.

Eventually they moved to their present location in Wingham, and the business has continued to evolve. They’ve added meals, baked goods and catering to their services, all showcasing local products wherever possible. The tag line for the kitchen products is “Just like Mama used to make”, and David enjoys doing much of the cooking and baking himself, making food that his customers can share with his family. Homegrown Local Grocers’ customers are especially smitten with the pot pies, which David says have a particularly flaky crust, as he uses an old family Irish recipe.

In addition to local produce, the store carries frozen meats, including beef, chicken and turkey from their own farm, along with pork, veal and lamb from other local producers. The store focuses on partnering with other farms who share their sustainable and ethical farming practices philosophy.

It’s a small family-run operation, so David says that there’s really no slow season, the rhythm just changes. From fresh produce in the summer, beginning with the early asparagus and then the garden vegetables, to the fall harvest. In the winter, baking and soups ramp up as people seek comfort food for the colder seasons.

The store also carries jams, preserves and sauces. The cooler is well stocked with a good selection of local cheeses. And did we mention the cheesecake?!

The website proclaims Save Time. Eat Well. Shop Local. - a mantra that is well executed.
