Goderich Salt Festival: A Weekend of Salted Sensations!
Have you ever noticed the towering salt cairn guarding the entrance to North Harbour Road as you travel into Goderich? That’s your first glimpse into a world wonder, a vast mine reaching 1,800 feet below, larger than the town itself. This year, the Goderich Salt Festival promises an unforgettable experience celebrating this remarkable feat of engineering.
Discover a hidden wonder beneath your feet at the Goderich Salt Festival, a unique celebration of the world's largest salt mine, taking place August 28 to 31! The award-winning event, hosted by Goderich Tourism, invites you to explore the town’s “salted” roots and delve into the fascinating story of the massive salt network sprawling beneath Lake Huron.
The weekend is packed with activities designed for everyone. Embark on above-ground tours by land and water, with hop-on, hop-off bus tours showcasing Goderich's history and its unique connection to salt. While going below ground into the active mine isn't possible, experience the wonder of the depths with the Compass Minerals Above the Ground Salt Experience and Mine Rescue Demonstrations along with the Goderich Tourism Virtual Reality Mine Images, videos and selfie stations. For family fun, there is a petting zoo, wagon rides, a family photo booth and inflatables.
The festival kicks off with a performance by Sal’s Alley in Courthouse Square as part of the BIA’s free Thursday night concert series. The Downtown Goderich BIA has partnered with the festival to present the Sunset Musical Festival during the weekend. On Friday, August 29 there will be a full slate of performances for a ticket price of just $10 (plus fees and taxes). More free entertainment will be back on Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. with Country Junction and
Bryan Bicknell Duo.
Saturday, August 30, is the festival's highlight, featuring Finger Eleven in concert, with local opening act Blackist Social. Tourism and Community Development Manager, Jenna Ujiye stated that “they are set to deliver an electrifying performance. Tickets are on sale now at saltedgoderich.ca
Local businesses and restaurants will highlight the area's "salted" heritage, along with diverse culinary offerings at the Food Truck Village. The festivities continue into the evening with the Salty Basin Beer Garden, ensuring a full day and night of enjoyment. The popular Salt Walk will return where festival-goers can walk across the bluffs and learn about the history of the salt mine with interactive panels.
