Goderich - GDCI Country Christmas Craft Show

For 25 years, the GDCI Country Christmas Craft Show has been a fixture of the holiday season, drawing visitors from across Ontario to Goderich. What began as a modest school fundraiser has evolved into a massive community event, requiring the clearing of the east and west gyms, the library, and several classrooms to accommodate over 130 vendors.

At the heart of the operation is Brenda McEwin, a former GDCI Educational Assistant who has steered the show for two and a half decades. For McEwin, the event is more than a market; it’s a community lifeline. While she credits the show’s success to careful curation, featuring strictly hand-crafted goods ranging from 3D art and jewellery to metalwork, she emphasizes its enduring impact. The proceeds directly fund essential school programs, including breakfast and lunch services and sports fees for students.

Brenda McEwin is no stranger to the circuit, serving as the coordinator for the summer’s Kinettes Arts and Crafts Festival in addition to her winter duties. Her extensive experience and deep connections within the community, combined with a tireless work ethic and a strategic approach to recruitment and social media, ensure a diverse roster of vendors and a robust attendance. Ultimately, it is McEwin's genuine passion for her work that fuels her success; she admits she would gladly take on the organization of even more festivals if the opportunity arose.

The event’s resilience is perhaps best captured by the year a tornado tore through Goderich. Rather than cancel, the community rallied, with students helping to transform the school into a gathering space. It’s a spirit that continues today, bolstered by the help of McEwin’s own family, who have turned the show into a multi-generational tradition.

This year, the event takes place on Saturday, November 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults, while children under twelve get in free.
