Big Buck Day

Organizers are expecting a huge turn-out for this year's Big Buck Day on April 11 in Seaforth.

Organizer Larry "Mouse" Dolmage says the Big Buck Day event has been running for almost 20 years now and he's been involved for about 17 years, with a break for a few years because of COVID. The event is held at the Seaforth Agriplex and it's an opportunity for hunters to bring in their deer racks or skulls and have them scored by the Foundation for the Recognition of Ontario Wildlife (FROW) members who record the numbers in their record books.

Dolmage says the show has grown significantly over the years and now attracts hunters from all over the province. He says they have racks brought in from Toronto, Parry Sound, Chatham and Sarnia to get them scored. Dolmage says there are awards, like metal art work for the biggest deer and there would be a cash prize as well for the biggest deer, the biggest bear and the biggest moose. Dolmage says the biggest reward for most of the hunters is bragging rights over the other hunters!.

Dolmage says they also have vendors at their show with a variety of products that every hunter and outdoor enthusiast needs. Past shows have seen displays of supplies, clothing, cleaning and taxidermy services, trophies and mounting supplies. He says one woman comes in from London every year and she sells jewellery that she makes out of old ammunition. He says all of the money they make from the show goes to kids programs in the Seaforth area.

As part of the show, there will be a hunting equipment show that is held in the smaller room of the Agriplex, as well as in the events room at the Seaforth and District Community Centre. The $10 admission (kids under 12 get in free!) covers both buildings, as well as getting your racks officially scored by FROW.  Scoring is also available for beards, spurs and skulls.
