Celebrating 170 Years of the Bayfield Agricultural Society
The Bayfield Agricultural Society is marking a significant milestone this year as it celebrates its 170th anniversary. President Doug Yeo explains that the society's history dates back to 1855, when letters were first circulated to gauge interest in forming the organization. By 1856, the group convened to establish judging categories and schedule the inaugural fair. Although initial interest waned slightly when membership fees were introduced in the second year, the society maintained enough support to proceed with that first event.
For the upcoming celebration, the society is blending beloved traditions with nostalgic activities. “‘Apple Pies & Harvest Skies: 170 Years in the Community’ is the theme for this special year. Imagine all the changes that have happened over 170 years, yet apple pies and harvest skies still exist and remind us of our rural roots and outdoor experiences,” says Yeo.
Highlighting a renewed interest in local history, organizers are preparing a series of four or five vintage games to give children a taste of what their parents or grandparents experienced at the fair. These will be offered alongside modern favorites like inflatables.
The exhibition halls will once again be filled with diverse classes for local competitors to showcase their talents. Musical performances, a perennial cornerstone of the fair experience, are slated to entertain crowds on both Friday and Saturday evenings. Livestock remains a central focus, with the 4-H and horse shows drawing attendees to the fairgrounds, while the farm animal display barn offers an up-close look at rural life. Culinary traditions continue as well, featuring the return of the Community Meal on Friday night alongside various food trucks offering a selection of seasonal treats.
The fair's scheduled attractions include a talented group of young precision riders, whose performances are often compared to the Musical Ride. They are set to perform on Sunday, following a Saturday appearance by a circus performer and an exhibition featuring birds of prey. Another unique event planned for Friday night to commemorate Bayfield's 150th birthday is a tractor pull. The society is currently searching for a 150 series tractor to feature in the competition, which is open to local service clubs and community members.
In keeping with the theme of creating lasting memories, the society is publishing a unique volume that combines a cookbook with a history book. The book will contain family-favourite recipes interspersed with shared stories and anecdotes or memories about the Ag Society and the fair. The fair is scheduled to take place from August 14 - 16 at the Agricultural Park Fair Grounds.
