Bainton’s

Bainton’s was founded in 1894 as a tannery and wool-pulling operation owned by two brothers, who soon began selling to the public, starting the first factory outlet in Blyth. Nearly 130 years later, the company is still in the leather and wool business and owned by the same family. Current owner Franklin Snell is the fourth generation to operate the business.

Over the years, the name Bainton’s has become known for high-quality leather and wool items at reasonable prices. Just as important to the brand is the local aspect of their business model. Frank and Allan Bainton began their business by trading finished wool blankets to local farms in exchange for their fleeces. Those relationships were the foundation of Bainton’s Old Mill.

The current building dates back to 1898 as both the factory and retail outlet. However, as manufacturing technology evolved, the three-storey building was no longer practical and they built a modern processing facility just outside of Blyth. The sprawling retail space that remains is loaded with Canadian-made items including the ever-popular motorcycle leathers.

Fashion evolves and they now sell more socks, sheepskins and gloves than ever before. The wool and alpaca socks that they carry are shipped all over the world. The best bargains can be found in the back room where “50% Off” signs hang above racks of jackets, belts and hats.

The friendly and knowledgeable staff are dedicated to the business and have many years of experience with their products. 206 Westmoreland St, Blyth  519-523-9666
